A Career in Facial Aesthetics - Things to Think About Before Your Training in Botox and Dermal Fillers

Starting your facial aesthetics journey can be daunting. Here at Inspired Cosmetic Training we want to make the process as easy as possible, so you can begin your career! Here’s a few things the team have put together to think about before you start your facial aesthetics career! Remember, we are just at the end of a phone if you want a chat 0141 638 4098 and we are happy to help.

 Training Provider and Course

Firstly, picking the right course. Quality and reputation should be a top priority for picking a training provider. When looking for a high-quality reputable company you should consider:

  • Who are the course tutors, are they well qualified and experienced in facial aesthetics, do they run their own clinics?
  • Who’s the course director, it’s always a good sign if they are they a key opinion leader in the industry?
  • Do they use high quality products during training?
  • Is the course held in a regulated clinic by health improvement Scotland? (If studying in Scotland)
  • Is your course accredited by the major medical aesthetic insurance companies?
  • Look at the feedback is it positive?

If you are happy with the answers to the above, then begin to look at the range of training courses they offer and the course content. Training providers should offer a full range of courses from foundation to advanced level courses and offer on-going support during your aesthetics journey. The courses should not only teach you the knowledge and skills you will need to practice facial aesthetics but also give you ‘hands on’ practical training on ‘live’ models. A few points to consider:

  • How much “hands on” practical training will you receive?
  • How many delegates do they take on each course?
  • Are you supported after the course and for how long?
  • Do they cover business set up and marketing?
  • What continuous professional development do they offer after your foundation training?

You will most likely want to begin your journey with a foundation course in both Botox and Dermal Fillers as this will give you the basic skills you need to perform the most popular facial aesthetic treatments followed on by a clear training pathway to support your development.

How am I going to set-up my facial aesthetics business?

Once you have found the right course, the next stage is to consider your set up. There are various ways you can set up your aesthetic business. Below are some questions to ask yourself:

  • Are you going to be doing facial aesthetics part time or full time?

Facial Aesthetics is a flexible career choice. You can work around your current job role or make it a full-time job!

  • Are you going to set up on your own or join a team at an existing clinic?

If you are looking to be your own boss and are prepared to build your client base then setting up on your own is the way to go! However, if this isn’t for you, there are plenty of well-established clinic around the country.

  • If you are setting up on your own, where will you be based?

You can rent a room in a clinic or open your own clinic. Wherever you choose to set up your business it is important to remember that the clinic must be a Health Improvement Scotland Registered Clinic! You can find out more information about that here: http://www.healthcareimprovementscotland.org/our_work/inspecting_and_regulating_care/independent_healthcare/regulation_of_clinics.aspx

You can set up a mobile business, however you will have to take more precautions and set this up properly. For more information on this please get in contact with us on 0141 638 4098

Shadowing

If you have friends or colleagues who already offer facial aesthetic treatments, it may be a good idea to ask if you can shadow them for a day or two. You will get to experience the injection procedure first hand and gain a hands-off familiarity with how it works. Here at Inspired Cosmetic Training we can offer a full mentoring programme as well.

Familiarise Yourself with the Products and Starter Kits

During your course, you will likely be using a variety of products to inject live models. As you progress in your aesthetic career, you’ll gain familiarity with which products are used for different areas of the face and will most likely develop preferences for certain products as you grow in experience. However, it can’t hurt to start familiarising yourself with the products and starter kits available.

Insurance

It is important to find a reputable, high quality cosmetic insurance to start your career right! Start shopping around and get some quotes for medical aesthetic insurance. With Inspired Cosmetic Training, our course certificates will get a discount with all the major cosmetic insurance companies including:

Hamilton Fraser Insurance – www.hamiltonfraser.co.uk

Cosmetic Insure - www.cosmeticinsure.com/home.html

Nurse Prescribers

Botox is a prescription medicine, a face to face consultation must be provided by a medically qualified person or a nurse prescriber. At Inspired Cosmetic Training we have lots of nurses coming on the course, many of who are not nurse prescribers. If you are not a nurse prescriber, there are several options you can consider.

  • Work alongside a prescriber to begin with
  • Rent rooms where there is a prescriber working
  • Use a prescribing service (At Inspired Cosmetic Training we can provide you with a list of people willing to do this, after you have completed the course).

You can arrange with your prescriber to see a group of your patients at one time, you can do the treatment there and then or your can do the treatment at a later stage as long as your prescriber has seen them
