Here’s a quick round up of some of the key points regarding registering with HIS.
Once you have completed your foundation or advanced Botox and filler training you will need to find somewhere to work. All medically trained professionals practising aesthetics must work out of a Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HiS) regulated premises.
You may choose to obtain practising privileges from a clinic that’s already HiS regulated or you can look at setting up your own clinic and obtaining HiS registration. Probably this is the easiest way to get started.
It is a process of checks to gain practising privileges that all HIS regulated clinics will go through with yourself, for example checks on qualifications, CPD training, references and so on. An updated PVG ( see more info below) is required from the clinic you are looking to get your practising privileges from, and a full induction has to be completed along with familiarising yourself with the clinics policies which you must work under.
If you decide that you would like to get your own clinic and register yourself with HIS, here’s some helpful tips and guidance on how to go about this process.
The application to register can only be completed using the online service at healthcareimprovementscotland.org
A pre-registration form will need to be completed and submitted.
After this, HiS will issue you with a login to the portal to allow you to complete the online registration form.
Documents should be submitted via portal, then a registration fee must be paid.
No fees should be paid prior to a fee notice being sent to you. Your application will then be sent to an inspector for processing, a site visit (inspection of your premises) will be carried out and, on satisfactory completion of this, registration will be granted.
Registration background checks are carried out and you will need to send in your PVG certificate as well as having a Police Act Disclosure(basic) background check carried out.
Identity checks are carried out which require you to use either the post office document certification service OR a solicitor or notary public. These documents must confirm your name, date of birth and current address and can include your passport, driving license, National Identity Card, National Entitlement Card, Utility Bill.
Healthcare Improvement Scotland can be contacted by telephone from 10am-2pm Monday-Friday on 0131 623 4342 or by email at his.ihcregulation.nhs.scot with any queries.
Guidance documents on how to apply can also be found on the Healthcare Improvement Scotland website.
What to expect
- Time frame – As a rough guide the timescale for processing registrations, once the fee has been paid, is a minimum of 3 months so factor this is to your plans.
- Costs. There are initial and annual payments to be made for registration. To register an independent Clinic the application for registration is £3500. This registration must be renewed annually at a cost of £1093 for independent clinics carrying out non-surgical procedures (single handed practitioner) and £1518 for Independent clinics with staff (including practicing privileges and admin staff). These annual renewals can be paid in a lump sum or spread over quarterly payments.
- Make sure to properly check the specifications of the space you wish to register to ensure thigs can be changed if they are not already compliant. For example, sinks and taps, can ventilation requirements be met?
- Expect your site visit to last 4-6 hours
- If you have any queries and contact HiS to ask advice make sure to get all the details in writing.
- Make contact with other HiS registered clinics or clinicians for support. There is an excellent WhatsApp group that will connect you with clinicians who have gone through or are going through the HiS registration process who are only too happy to offer help and advice and share their experiences.
