- As medical professionals, safety should always your number one priority. Here’s some pointers for ensuring the safety of your patients and helping to build you a reputable business:
1/ Are you qualified to undertake Botox and dermal filler injections
Firstly, train with a reputable training academy to make sure you are a safe and competent injector, one that doesn’t train non medics. Find out what on-going support you’ll receive after your course too.
There’s competition out there from non-medics in the aesthetic industry so your should promote your medical qualification along with your medical aesthetic training certificates. This makes patients automatically feel more comfortable and confident in your ability to treat them.
2/ Are you improving your skills with Continuous Professional Development (CPD) training?
“Commit yourself to lifelong learning. The most valuable asset you’ll ever have is your mind and what you put into it.”-Albert Einstein.
CPD training allows you to build your knowledge, treatment range and stay safe. It allows you to stay up to date with trends within the industry and improve your skills, no one knows it all! As well as building your own confidence, continuous training will improve the confidence your patients have in you as it demonstrates your professionalism and commitment to the aesthetic industry.
All of our courses make up CPD hours!
3/ Are you using the safest products?
Make sure you are using products that are bought from reputable companies such as Healthxchange or Church Pharmacy as this will put your patients at ease and limit the risk of complications. Using an unknown supplier from overseas can be unsafe as you do not necessarily know what is in the product you are receiving therefore compromising your patients safety, and your reputation!
4/ Are you storing your products safely?
This is such a simple point but so important not to forget! For example, anti-wrinkle treatments need to be refrigerated according to manufacturer instructions
5/ Are you insured?
Make sure you have appropriate cover for all the treatments you practice, to protect both you and your patients. Well established companies we recommend Hamilton Fraser or Enhance Insurance.
6/ Have you got a fully equipped emergency kit in your clinic?
Emergency kits are essential for any clinic (and not only because Healthcare Improvement Scotland say so!). An emergency kit can help you in a variety of sticky situations from allergic reactions to anaphylaxix, make sure all products are in date.
7/ Are you working in a clean & sanitary environment?
Not only does is look good for your business image but it keeps your patients safe, it’s a no brainer! This includes cleaning the treatment area multiple times before and during treatment. Simple things such as making sure hair is tied back and your patient not wearing makeup can prevent devastating infections.
Treatments should be delivered from a sterile surface as part of infection control which is why for example, the use of sterile dressing packs is so important. Needles and cannulas should not touch any non-sterile surface during treatment. The treatment must stop immediately in order to replace the contaminated equipment if this happens.
8/ Do you know what to do in the event of complications?
It is your responsibility as a practitioner to undergo complication training & do as much research to learn about potential complications and what to do in the unlikely event of one – there are great resources out there! For our delegates, Inspired Cosmetic Training have a private Facebook group and our webinar from Dr Patrick Treacy on ’20 years of complications’ which you can find in our delegate resource area
If you are an ICT delegate & don’t have access to these, drop us an email at office@inspiredcosmetictraining.com and we will help you out!
9/ Paperwork!!!
Correctly filling out paperwork is just as much about protecting yourself as a practitioner as it is protecting your patients. Thoroughly going through your patients medical history form as well as discussing allergies, medication etc is of such high importance, remember always double check for cold sores! Completing your patient treatment plan is essential so you have accurate information to look back on should the patient return with any queries or complaints, you need to confidently be able to back yourself up. Ask all the right questions and document everything.
10/ Are you making a treatment plan tailor made for every patient?
No two faces are the same therefore, neither should any two treatment plans be! Individual plans should be made based on analysis of the patients face even if they are only getting one area treated. This can then be discussed with the patient before an agreement is made.
11/ Are you practicing from a Healthcare Improvement Scotland registered clinic?
As medics, this is a must! A quick google search will inform you if a premises is registered with HIS. The Glen Clinic is a perfect exampled of a HIS registered clinic located in the Southside of Glasgow.
12/ Are you storing your patients data securely and lawfully?
Make sure all of your patients data in line with General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This also includes photographs of your patients!
Following these pointers will give you confidence that you have done everything in your power to keep your patients safe, no corners should be cut. If you are ever unsure of anything, ask by getting in touch on 0141 638 4098 / office@inspiredcosmetictraining.com!
